Playing blackjack has been a wildly popular past time in casinos for decades upon decades. One of the reasons for this is blackjack provides you with the opportunity to win big if you are able to go on a solid win streak. Hitting a major win streak, however, is only going to be possible when you play the odds to your favor. Whether you are in a brick and mortar casino or are playing online blackjack, there are certain odds you have to take into consideration prior to making a decision as to what to do. The consideration of the odds should also factor into how much you intend to wager on a particular hand.

Hitting or Sticking Based on the Dealer’s Face Card

The dealer in blackjack is required (unless you are playing a variation of traditional blackjack) to hit on 16 and stand on 17. Being forced to take a card before you know what the dealer’s total is creates risks for the player. However, there are times when the face card the dealer shows puts him/her at a disadvantage. The same disadvantage exists when playing a software simulation of the game.

If the face card is a 6 or under, then he/she has to take a card. The only exception to this would be if it turns out the dealer has an ace and a 6. (11 + 6 = 17) Since the dealer has to hit and must keep hitting until reaching the minimum of 17, then the dealer runs a risk of breaking. Standing, even on a total as low as a 12, is usually advised. With an 11, this is a great opportunity to double down since the odds work for you.

Conversely, if the dealer is showing an ace or a face card, you might want to hit because the chances the dealer’s total is a 20 or 21. If you have an 11, hitting is smart but doubling down might not be so wise. The reason is the chance is great you may lose and you do not want to double your bet in such a risky scenario.

Keep these and other factors related to the odds in mind when you play blackjack and you might discover your gaming sessions are profitable.
